The Series 90-70 is a family of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for GE's Intelligent Platform, of which the RX3i is a part of its PACSystems family.
Key features of the Series 90-70 PLC include:
Compact, single-slot CPU modules with two main processors, an Intel microprocessor for handling analog or special function control, and a Boolean coprocessor for performing high-speed switching control, with floating-point capability on some models.
The standard VMEbus architecture system rack allows the installation of over 300 third-party VME standard modules.
Large I/O capacity of up to 12,288 switching points and 8,192 analog points.
CPU memory expandable from 32K bytes to 6M bytes.
High-density (32-point) AC or DC I/O modules, and simple module clamps prevent incorrect installation of I/O modules.
Standard hardware response to switching or analog interrupt inputs, handling 64 event interrupts and 16 time interrupts.
Convenient system and module self-diagnostics for easy troubleshooting.
Battery-backed internal calendar and clock in the CPU module.
Genius Distributed I/O Module Subsystem, FieldControl System, and VersaMax configurations for dual-bus system redundancy, fully synchronized CPU hot-standby redundancy for special applications, and even ESD Dualization and Triplex GMR system configurations for ESD (Emergency Stop Systems).

Features a 1.0GHz Intel microprocessor and 64MB of user memory with patented fast throughput rates without message bottlenecks for simpler control without multiple controllers.
A wide selection of I/O modules including Ethernet, Genius, Profibus and serial communications.
Adopts a general-purpose PCI bus backplane with a high-speed PCI bus speed of 27MHz, enabling greater data throughput for complex I/Os and faster serial bus read/write for simple I/Os. Supports high-density discrete I/Os, general-purpose analog (TC, RTD, strain gage, voltage-current grouping per channel) I/Os, isolated analog I/Os, high-density analog I/Os, and high-speed counters, Motion control modules optimize system performance and investment, and the backplane bus supports a powered plug-and-play function to reduce system downtime.
Upgrading from the Series 90-70 to the RX3i offers certain advantages. For example, GE's PAC3i series offers superior performance and a smaller installation size. For some users of Series 90-70 products, there may be a shortage of spare parts because the series has been discontinued and some modules are no longer available for service. The upgrade solution, such as the use of conversion racks, can be upgraded from the original 90-70 I/O to RX3i I/O, which is much easier to install in the field, can greatly reduce the control system rewiring construction time, minimize the time of stopping the car and the workload of on-site engineering, and minimize the economic losses caused by stopping the car for renovation. At the same time, the upgraded control system supports the Profinet protocol, which has stronger real-time performance and higher network throughput, and its transmission rate is much higher than that of the earlier Genius protocol.
